If there's anyone in the game today that can get a pass with lyrically ripping 32 Hip Hop classics, while obviously paying homage to the original artists, it's got to be Mr. Ortiz. Being an avid listener of Joell Ortiz, it is easy to see that his roots hail from the old school New York MC era, so covering the (mostly) New York Hip Hop classics are right down his alley.

Overall it's a great listen. I recommend playing the originals back-to-back with Joell's versions - it's entertaining to see how Joell tries to fit into each of the artists' flow.

Its obvious dude is making a point to stay on his humble. Good stuff tho, we could use a lil of that in an artist nowadays.

On another note, in a recent convo with Sapphire I was asked if there could be another genre to emerge after Hip-Hop. The point was made that it would have to have a poignant cultural backdrop like people who were too poor or young to get into Discotheques like Studio 54 and *5 Percenters* were for Hip-Hop (do your homework if you dont know this) . . .

My answer was artists like CuDi, Drake. They represent the Godfathers of another sub genre at the least. It will be personable music that include vulnerability, swagger, and women in a way unseen before. I feel like Weezy and Yeezy are like the KRS-Ones with the auto-tuned, emotion-filled melodic rap if you will. CuDi and Drizzy are the next level, like the Pac and Big of the new shit.

In the sense that Lupe's The Cool is a conceptual expansion on the track "He Say She Say" of the 1st album, *808s* is an expansion on "Flashing Lights".

*808's* continues the sounds of the music with no/minimal samples and big bass, and lyrically with tragic, personal subject matter. I admit: it may be so personally that it is awkward for the listener too. But it is art nonetheless.

Jadakiss - Letter To BIG

I have to be perfectly honest, when I first heard about this song, I imagined it to be an incredible song. Man, was I disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the song is decent, but Jada appears to have some sort of agenda with this track - rather than taking this track beyond the level of expectancy. I mean throwing a little jab at 50 in the middle of a tribute doesn't seem quite right to me. From the supposed self-proclaimed kings statements to the never-ending boasting of himself, the overall message I received from this track is that he is claiming to be the King of NY - what else is new. He did bring up resolved issues with people that both BIG and Kiss had a past with, e.g. Kim and Puff. The emotion is what saved the song, in my opinion. Talking about BIG's kids, and how they have grown was the highlight by far - I suppose I was expecting more of this, not just how his kids have grown, but maybe how the old Bad Boy Fam has grown. All in all, the song is mediocre, and is far from a "One Love."

Whats interesting about Lupe and this track is that it illustrates a shift in Lupe's work. Ever since the release of the dark, thematic "Lupe Fiasco Presents: The Cool", dude has offered his listeners more off a common man's touch in his lyrics. And in my opinion, thats all dude needed to take him to access a wider Hip-Hop audience and ascend to the next level.

There seemed to always be something with each album that turned off the average hip-hopper: the skateboader image of his first single and the elitist, intricate and super lyrical sophmore album. Whats he has done so far was definitely needed in the game but its time for Lupe to bridge back-pack music with the trap-hop music like Nas does.

On another note, Gemstone does his thing on this track. This is off his mixtape "Coast to coast" on which Lupe appeared. Look out for Gemstones and other "1st & 15th" artist.

Free has come a long way: Legendary rap battle with fellow Philly rapper Cassidy, the dismantle of State Property (the Philly Wu-Tang for many of us), surviving the Jay and Dame break-up, the relatively lukewarm buzz created by his sophomore album *Free at Last*. . .

And none of that has stopped the kid.

Since then, dude has been on his grind hard. And as of late, the emcee will dish out a continualy flow of music--Month of Madness. The rapper is in the booth daily and you can expect a song a day from the rap factory known as the Philadelphia Freeway.

Respect the grind.

We may be halfway into the "Month of Madness" by now but that leaves you 15 days of 15 tracks of Freeway that you can hear all over the net. . .A recession will drive a man to do unimanginable things like this. All we can do as listners is sit back, keep a look out and lend an ear for the Hip-Hop game as it unfolds.

It'll be interesting to see how they try to portray dude. Im looking to contrast this flick with the introspective Tupac Ressurection. This flick--if done right--will be so dope. Either way you rock, this movie is a good look. I know emcees all over will be taking both notes and theater seats. . .

Furthermore, Nas's verse is very *808's & Heartbreak* influenced if you ask me. (And I find that to be a great thing. No dis!). It just the entire concept of exploring the mans' man perspective of a relationship is very relevant (and needed) in the game right now. In no way is Nasir jockin nobody's swag, but he IS down with the kanYeness if noone else is. . .God's Son joined 'Ye late in his tour consisting of 808's.
