Joell Ortiz - Covers the Classics
If there's anyone in the game today that can get a pass with lyrically ripping 32 Hip Hop classics, while obviously paying homage to the original artists, it's got to be Mr. Ortiz. Being an avid listener of Joell Ortiz, it is easy to see that his roots hail from the old school New York MC era, so covering the (mostly) New York Hip Hop classics are right down his alley.
Overall it's a great listen. I recommend playing the originals back-to-back with Joell's versions - it's entertaining to see how Joell tries to fit into each of the artists' flow.

This is something I have found to be especially true as the infamous finals week beats me into restless, stressful chaos lol. enjoy

They got those fancy degrees because they were expert students, and expert students learn early - probably from essay exams - that you can be dumb as a brick on the big picture and practical application of knowledge but still get an "A-" if you can analyze a dozen or so finite pieces of an issue individually in a simple, confident fashion. Some would say this is a variation on the old advice, "K.I.S.S." Right acronym, but they're one word off. If you don't have the balls for decisions, and most of us don't, the rule is "Keep It Small, Stupid." The technology center, more commonly known as "club tech", is more poppin (and crowded) than ever. But this is what we do at temple. We Grind!
Spring is here, but if i have to hear the north philly icecream truck ring out its little jingle i ll loose my fuckin mind. lol
On the other hand, the cookie truck...Insomnia Cookies is heaven on campus. Im about to grab that early am. snack boy
students unite! we'll rule this world one day.

On another note, in a recent convo with Sapphire I was asked if there could be another genre to emerge after Hip-Hop. The point was made that it would have to have a poignant cultural backdrop like people who were too poor or young to get into Discotheques like Studio 54 and *5 Percenters* were for Hip-Hop (do your homework if you dont know this) . . .
My answer was artists like CuDi, Drake. They represent the Godfathers of another sub genre at the least. It will be personable music that include vulnerability, swagger, and women in a way unseen before. I feel like Weezy and Yeezy are like the KRS-Ones with the auto-tuned, emotion-filled melodic rap if you will. CuDi and Drizzy are the next level, like the Pac and Big of the new shit.
Either way, its dope. And heres an chillin ass interview with the Cudder himself. . . . .

Before you watch this (or ignore it b/c its 808's material) i'd like to share a realization of mine that is in 'Ye's defense. 808's is more or less like a concept album. In the sense that Lupe's The Cool is a conceptual expansion on the track "He Say She Say" of the 1st album, *808s* is an expansion on "Flashing Lights".
*808's* continues the sounds of the music with no/minimal samples and big bass, and lyrically with tragic, personal subject matter. I admit: it may be so personally that it is awkward for the listener too. But it is art nonetheless.
